PHOENIX (AP) - Rep. Ron Barber is facing competition in next week's 2nd Congressional District Democratic primary that he didn't see when he ran to replace Rep. Gabrielle Gifford this spring.
State Rep. Matt Heinz was among Democrats who got behind Barber when Giffords endorsed him as her replacement in the southeastern Arizona district. But Heinz says voters deserve a real primary choice in this election so he's challenging Barber.
The Republican primary election pits retired Air Force Col. Martha McSally against Mark Koskiniemi. She was the first woman to fly in combat and command a fighter squadron. He's a chemical engineer by training.
Barber and McSally are considered by many as the front-runners to win the primary and face off in November.
The swing district is considered winnable by either party.
