Boy gets scholarship after lemonade stand raises cash for mowing

DETROIT (WJBK) -

He was selling lemonade for a good cause, but a boy from Detroit had no idea his good deed would also help him go to college.  The Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation saw our story on nine-year-old Joshua Smith, and now the group wants to help him with his higher education.

Friday, Joshua got the chance to test drive the very lawnmower that cut the grass at his favorite park.  Proceeds from his lemonade stand are being donated to the City of Detroit to help to keep the grass cut at the park by his house.  Joshua is now an international star.

"They're telling me I think you're doing a great job, and it's been nice," he said.

Thank you's and donations have come all the way from South Africa, but also locally.  A steady stream of Joshua's friends and neighbors have been keeping his lemonade stand busy.  More than $2,200 has been donated to his cause, and that's just the beginning.

"There are a lot worse parks in the city, but other parks don't have a kid raising a thousand dollars by selling lemonade to help them out.  So that got us down here," said Tom Nardone with the volunteer group the Mower Gang.

He made a special trip to Detroit and said Fox 2's story on Smith touched his heart.

"Everything about it I liked.  I'm an entrepreneur, so I like that.  The kid's just raising money so the city can afford to mow the parks, which is what we're all about, and then I called his mom.  His mom is like sweet as sugar.  I was like this woman is raising a good kid," Nardone said.  "So we're going to mow two of the parks in his neighborhood."

After a quick test drive from Joshua, the Mower Gang got to work cutting grass in not one, but two Detroit parks near his house.

"Thank you and you've been really supportive, and I'm really happy."

Joshua's parents are really happy, too.  Friday, the Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation awarded him a $2,000 scholarship for his spirit of service.

"He's learned a lesson.  I mean, one man can still make a difference," said Flynn Smith, Joshua's dad.

Joshua plans to drop off his money at City Hall on Tuesday.  City Council also plans to present him with an award.
