A Phoenix woman is behind bars, accused of killing her own husband in historic downtown Phoenix. His family is well-known in the valley. They own more than a dozen fast food restaurants.
Police say 31-year-old Rebekah Mellon shot her husband then called 911, and police are trying to figure out why.
Police were called to the home near Encanto and Central late Tuesday night by Rebekah Mellon. When police got there they found 46-year-old Don Mellon Jr. in the living room. He'd been shot.
Rebekah wouldn't talk to police. Right now investigators believe alcohol was involved.
"This is an absolutely gorgeous home in a very very quiet neighborhood here in Phoenix, so we hope we can sort this all out and come up with an answer for the family," says Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.
The couple had just moved into the home off Encanto and Central. Don Mellon Jr's father owns 17 McDonald's franchises in the west valley.
"To me they always stood out in the neighborhood. the cars, there was a BMW, there are people here are affluent but I don't really think that affluent," says one neighbor who didn't want to be identified.
Police say the couple had history of calling police during arguments. Don Mellon Jr. has three kids and a stepson. Police say none of the kids were home with the shooting happened.
Don's friend Keetah Adair sent us an email saying: "DJ...was an amazing giving man and we loved him dearly....this was a devastating loss. My heart breaks for what Rebekah has robbed from this family."
