The families of several of the victims were in court today, including the mother, father, and girlfriend of former valley resident Alex Teves.
Teves was killed in the Aurora, Colorado shooting while trying to protect his girlfriend from gunfire.
We talked to a friend and some of his former teachers.
Even though Alex Teves graduated six years ago, his former teachers tell me he's the kind of student you don't forget. They say he was smart, well-liked, but most of all, he was incredibly kind.
One of his best friends says that when he got the news of what happened he just broke down.
"I just started crying right away just couldn't believe it," says Rowan Benedict, a friend of Teves' since high school and classmate at the University of Arizona.
"My favorite times were at U of A drinking chocolate milk. Neither one of us could drink yet, we would just people watch."
Rowan Benedict says his heart sank when he found out Teves was among the victims shot and killed Friday at a Colorado movie theater. But he wasn't surprised that Teves died protecting his girlfriend.
He says the two were very much in love.
"The people he loved, he would do anything for him, taking a bullet wasn't surprising."
Rowan's mom Deb taught one of Alex's high school English classes. She says his passion for comic books was pretty obvious.
"In class with his writing, he would bring super heroes, weave them into his tale," says Deb Benedict.
What she recalls most though was his compassion.
She says Teves was among a group hurt in a car accident back in high school -- but even though he'd been injured all he cared about was how his friends were doing.
"He would ask, 'how was Tyler doing, what was going on?' Just shows what a great person he was," says Benedict.
She says she's struggling with the question of why.
"The loss of innocent lives. Why do you have to do that, why do you have to kill someone for no reason, especially someone like Alex?"
Alex has two younger brothers who both attend Desert Vista High School. The principal says they are working on putting together some sort of memorial there or organizing a special day in his honor.
