A big change is coming to the Phoenix Police Department. The new chief is changing the uniforms.
Officers can wear the more formal blue uniform, or they can wear a more casual uniform of a black polo and cargo pants.
Starting October 1, all officers will be required to wear the blue uniform, complete with metal badge and name tag.
The chief says he wants to make Phoenix Police officers instantly recognizable in the community.
"When you see our officers in public and you see our officers serving search warrants at your home and doing investigations this is what you're going to see us in," says Phoenix Police Sgt. Trent Crump.
The change is also a matter of safety. Phoenix police say the black casual uniform can be easily impersonated.
