DETROIT (WJBK) -

State Rep. Jimmy Womack said he should have seen it coming.  Three men followed him out Caesar Food Center on Detroit's west side.  All three had guns.  All three were pointed right at him.

"I was getting into my car and three gentlemen ran up to me with guns, put the guns to my head and told them to give them the keys to my car.  I told them I didn't have keys.  They told me to start the car.  I said, 'I'm not going to start the car, and I'm not going to give you the car,'" Womack said Tuesday.  "They said to each other, 'Well, we'll just take the money,' and they reached into my pocket and took about $300, then they ran away laughing."

Womack recognized at least one of the guys and gave police a description.

A day later, there was another robbery on the same street, this one fatal.

Womack says he's lucky his instincts didn't get him killed.

"I want your listeners to know that your life is not worth your material possessions, but I guess because I recognized one of the perpetrators as someone who's local in the neighborhood, I looked him square in his eye and said, 'I'm not giving you my car.'  That was instinct and it was wrong, and so I thank God they didn't hurt me, they didn't hit me, they didn't shoot me."
