Kiplinger names Phoenix a top travel destination

PHOENIX -

Kiplinger, the big name in travel, put Phoenix on their 2012 list of the cheapest U.S. cities that you want to visit.

Phoenix finished second behind Riverside, California, but ahead of Atlanta, Charlotte, North Carolina, and Columbus, Ohio.

Why is Phoenix such a "hot spot" for travel?

From inexpensive meals to cheap flights, from affordable hotels to interesting attractions, Kiplinger says Phoenix has it all. On their list is the Phoenix gem the Heard Museum.

Monday we found people from all over the world taking a tour.

A woman visiting from China picked up this Native American flute at the Heard Museum Gift Shop.

The couple says stopping here was on their list of things to do during their week long visit to Phoenix.

The landmark institution, built in 1929, was recently named one of the best places in Phoenix to visit.

Spokesperson Jaclyn Roessel says the title is an honor. During a brief tour, Roessel points out some of the artwork visitors can learn about.

"What is really important and unique about the Heard Museum is that we not only give you and show you the objects that American people have made," she says.

Nestled downtown, the museum is a city gem, which according to Kiplinger is the second best in the nation to visit this summer.

The company says the average meal in Phoenix costs $34.61, flight costs are below the national average, and hotels charge 17 percent less than similar cities.

There are also four professional sports teams.

The Hermsen family from Holland drove into the city today. They're taking a tour of the west coast and made a stop in Phoenix a priority.

"It was part of our tour through the west, we thought it would be a good stop, a beautiful city to look around for a couple of hours," says Ine Hermsen.

Through the month of July the museum is offering Summer Sundays. Admission to the museum from 11 to 4 p.m. is free and includes some pretty neat hands-on exhibits and activities for the kids.
