Detroit police took measurements and marked off shell casings Saturday while a family mourned. They tell us Michael Reynolds, 15, was shot in the chest around 4:30am Saturday at the corner of Toledo and Lansing in southwest Detroit. His mom came home from work around 3:30am.
"I seen my son. I talked to him for a few minutes. He told me he was going out the door across the street to his friends house for a few minutes," Tracy Reynolds said. "I told him I didn't want him to, but if he did to hurry up and get back in the house because I wanted to go to bed. About 5-10 minutes heard gunshots right in front of the house."
Sadly, Michael was hit. Another teen who's 17-18 was also shot and critically injured. Family members frantically called 9-1-1 for help. But an ambulance never came.
"They just left my son to die on the porch," said Edward Chavira.
Witnesses say they saw five people in a car. Right now, the shooter is still on the loose. There was reportedly another shooting involving a rival gang earlier Saturday. Police believe Reynolds was shot and killed in retaliation.
"I tried to keep him away, tried to talk to him, get him a job, he was working," said Tracy Reynolds. "I couldn't tie him down, lock him in the room, so I gave him some freedom. I figured if I gave him the space this wouldn't happen but I guess that was wrong."
Anyone with information should call Detroit Police Homicide: (313) 596-2260.
Family members say a fund has been set up through Chase bank on Springwells and Vernor to help pay for Reynolds' funeral.
