It had to be a shocking sight: a mother pouring beer from a pitcher into her toddler's sippy cup.
That's what police say happened at a Peter Piper Pizza restaurant in Ahwatukee and the mother might have gotten away with it had a witness not called the police.
36-year-old Valerie Topete admitted to giving her 2-year-old son a little beer on Tuesday.
According to court documents, the boy kept reaching for a pitcher of beer, so Topete put a "splash of beer" in the child's sippy cup, hoping he wouldn't like the taste.
She told police she did it as reverse psychology to stop him from grabbing the pitcher of beer.
When other mothers heard the news, they couldn't believe it.
"She gave her 2-year-old child an alcoholic beverage..alcohol is deadly to children of course," said a mother at the restaurant.
A witness called 911 after seeing the child fall out of his high chair. That witness also knew what was in the sippy cup, which led them to believe the child might be intoxicated.
The child was taken to a hospital and is okay, but Topete was arrested. She admitted to police that after she poured the beer into the sippy cup, she observed the little boy putting the cup to his lips and knew he likely drank it.
Just like that witness, these mothers would have called 911 too.
"If you saw that...for sure we would."
"I mean it is completely wrong. You wouldn't hesitate at all. Not hesitate at all."
Police got a hold of that sippy cup and say the liquid inside had foam along with the odor of alcohol.
Topete is looking at a child abuse charge which is a class 4 felony.
