SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -
Fireworks fever is here, and with the ones that leave the ground now legal in Michigan, they are more popular than ever.
Fireworks stands are already selling out of their smaller aerial fireworks because, while they're cheaper, they still give off quite the show, a show that can turn dangerous if you're not careful.
"Treat any fireworks as a mini explosive, if you will, because they do have gun powder composition in them, and they should only be handled by adults," said Southfield fire inspector Michael Albo.
The woman who lives in a home on Rainbow Drive is Southfield told us a sparkler started a blaze and the dry conditions didn't help. The sparkler caught the bushes on fire, then the flames jumped to her house.
"I want to encourage people to go see a public display rather than take them in the hands of themselves," Albo said.
While Roman candles and bottle rockets can be bought in Michigan now, cherry bombs and M-80s remain illegal due to a federal ban. Fire investigators say it's also a good idea to check with the city in which you live to see if there are any new fireworks ordinances that are now in place.
