The killed and wounded tallies sound like those from a war in a far off country like Afghanistan or Iraq.
But the war is right here in our city. This past weekend in Chicago, there were 39 separate shooting incidents that left seven dead, and the weekend before, 53 people were shot with nine dead - almost all victims of gang related warfare. This has been happening weekend after weekend resulting in 228 killed so far this year. That number is quadruple the number murdered in New York and double that of L.A. so far this year.
There have been many gut wrenching stories of parents whose children have been innocent victims of the wild shooting sprees. This past Monday night, FOX Chicago News reporter Craig Wall interviewed a mother and got her response to her daughter's senseless killing.
What are we going to do? How can we let this murder and mayhem continue to go on this summer?
Didn't the Mayor and Police Superintendent take an oath to protect ALL the citizens of Chicago no matter where they reside?
What would it be like to live on a street where your neighbors and friends were shot while sitting on their porch or walking down the street?
The Mayor must take strong action and do so in a very profound way - we need the equivalent of the SURGE in Iraq - we must find ways to stem the violence before it can start and we must have a massive show of strength to send a strong signal to the gang members that this current state of mayhem will not stand.
It is patently unfair for those of us who live in safe neighborhoods to ignore what is going on and not demand that our city take action.
I'm convinced that our police department can answer the challenge - let's give them what they need to get the job done and do it now!
