Police and firefighters rescued a naked man from Tempe Town Lake Wednesday.
Officers say he had been trespassing on the light rail bridge -- which is a felony. He took off his clothes and got into the water.
Police and firefighters on boats went out to get him, but he swam away from them every time they got close.
Authorities tried multiple times to get him onto a boat. He eventually gave up more than an hour later.
"It is a bit of a surprise. I mean it's a long time to be in the water… any time that you know you're swimming for longer than you know 20 minutes, I mean that's a long time," said Tempe Police Sgt. Jeff Glover.
Police believe the man was on drugs.
Paramedics took him to the hospital to be checked out. Officers say it's illegal to swim in Tempe Town Lake.
The man has been identified as 38-year-old Chris Brown. He is facing charges of indecent exposure, failure to identify, obstruction of a public thoroughfare, defecating in public, use of water for swimming, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The mug shot is from an arrest last month for false reporting to law enforcement.
