Neighbors: Dad shot after standing up for his kids in Warren

WARREN, Mich. (WJBK) -

The fight started at an ice cream truck, but neighbors say kids in two families have been fighting for weeks, so when a father stepped in and said tell your kids to leave mine alone, someone pulled out a gun.

"I heard six, seven gunshots," said neighbor Brittany Koppman.

Police say bullying could have caused a fight that put a loving father, Mason Pannell, in the hospital with several gunshot wounds.  Neighbors say four siblings were targeted by several kids on the same street.  Pannell asked parents of those children to get control of their kids.

"We just couldn't believe it. They started fighting and pushing and shoving and then all of a sudden that guy come out with his gun and he started shooting," said a witness.

"The girlfriend flew down the street. There was blood all over the side of the car.  Hurried up and rushed him to the hospital," Koppman explained.

Police say a woman supporting Pannell had a gun, but dropped it.  Pannell picked it up and when one of the other parents saw that, they say he shot Pannell several times.

"I took two of the kids that were in the car with blood all over it over to my house and gave them each a juice box and a hug and told them that your daddy will be fine," the witness told us.

Police say the shooter is in custody and could be arraigned as early as Wednesday.
