Man accused of drowning friend in Lake Pleasant

PEORIA, Ariz. -

Around 8 a.m. Sunday, a team of divers from the Maricopa County Sheriff's office began searching Lake Pleasant for a suspect that disappeared around 5 p.m. on Saturday.

According to MCSO, witnesses called 911 and told dispatchers they saw three men in two separate canoes out on the water in what appeared to be a struggle.

Authorities say two of the men ended up in the water.  One slipped under and never resurfaced.

Witnesses on the shore held the other two suspects until the police arrived.  They were later identified as 21-year-old Eduardo Mercado and 26-year-old Julian Tamayo, both of El Mirage.

Police suspect all three men were using meth.  Police say Mercado held 21-year-old Rueben Diaz under water until he didn't resurface.

After about three hours of searching, divers pulled Diaz's from the water. It was about 30 yards from where he initially went under.

"The waters only about 10 feet deep below the first 10, there's about 10 feet of silt which is like quicksand..the body was lodged in that," said Jay Davies of the Peoria Police Department.

Both Mercado and Tamaylo are facing murder, theft and drug charges.
