It all started in Grosse Pointe's Hard Luck Lounge, located on Mack Avenue.
Three friends - Mike Mouyianis, Chris George and Rob - were enjoying a few drinks together when they first came up with the idea to develop their own flavored vodka.
"We started messing around, there was a lot of fruit infusions happening and we started messin' around with candy - and found that some of them worked really well," Mouyianis told FOX 2's Jackie Paige. "You couldn't even really taste the vodka anymore."
Mouyianis had an advantage when it came to testing out the trio's creation.
His girlfriend just happens to own the Hard Luck Lounge, and she was happy to let patrons try the flavored vodkas.
"It went over really well," Mouyianis said. "And we started thinking maybe we should look into this and start mass producing it."
It took more than two years, but that's exactly what they did.
Hard Luck Candy was born. The beverage is bottled in Temperance, MI and can be shipped anywhere.
"They're good just straight, they're good on the rocks. Or you can go to our Web site and find recipes for pretty much anything," Mouyianis added.
The three friends never thought that a typical night out drinking would ever lead to something like this.
"A lot of the process has been hard luck for us," George said, explaining where the their name came from. "Getting federal approval and the bottles the way we wanted them - it's just about pushing through the hard luck."
"We hoped our sitting around drinking would lead to something," Mouyianis said.
Swedish Fish and Root Beer are the two flavors available now, but more are on the way in the upcoming months.
