Mother's Day did not go as planned for several moms in the city of Ramsey. "I woke up hearing screaming." says Maria Spear. "I open the door and my neighbor is standing there just screaming and I see flames coming out of her garage door."
Spears lives in a fourplex on Fluorine Avenue and the center unit next to hers was on fire around 1 a.m. Sunday. The Ramsey Fire Chief says the fire started in the garage. A fire wall protected Spear's home from the flames but the smoke and water damage is everywhere.
"It looks like someone spray painted the place with black spray paint," said Spear's boyfriend Chris Irwin.
Spears and Irwin got their two girls out of the house and made sure everyone in the three units connected to theirs were outside and safe as well. Everyone, including a toddler and several pets got out safely.
Needless to say, this was not how anyone planned to spend Mothers Day, yet Spears feel fortunate. The family next lost their camper, their car and flames burnt through the garage and into the main living space of the house.
"Yes it's kinda sad but I'm just happy we are alive," said Spears. "And I'm with my family... it's just 'what can you do?'"
The Red Cross is helping some of affected the families. Some do not have insurance.
