One year since Greer Lodge fire

Posted: Updated:
GREER, Ariz. -

One year ago today, the historic Greer Lodge burned to the ground in the early morning hours. By the time firefighters had doused the flames, all that was left was the lodge's chimney.

We spoke with the resort's owner about what the past 12 months have been like.

In a word, the last year has been tough for the Greer Lodge Resort.

While the owner said losing the lodge itself was like Disneyland losing the Matterhorn, he is trying to get the word out he is still in business.

May 10, 2011, the historic Greer Lodge was incinerated.

Bright orange flames turned more than 60 years of memories into ash and smoke. All that was left was the large stone chimney.

A year later, owner Doug Sandahl is still shaken up by the thought of what happened.

"The Greer lodge was our symbol. And now that symbol, that icon is gone," he said.

The lodge itself was the heart of the resort. It has not been rebuilt yet, but there are still 50 cabins open. Doug says business has been tough because people think the whole resort burned to the ground.

"The public perception that the Greer lodge resort burned down has been a struggle. You have to go out and re-educate the public that we are still in business."

The owner does have plans to rebuild. He is working with the insurance company on a settlement.

He says the new Greer Lodge will be as close as possible to the old one.

No word on when construction will start.
