Tempe Improv to shutter its doors

TEMPE, Ariz. -

Some of the biggest names in comedy have performed at the Tempe Improv, but that's all coming to an end. The club will be going dark.

The biggest names and the funniest acts at the pinnacle of success in the comedic world all shined in the spotlight of the Tempe Improv.  An institution for nearly a quarter century, the club simply can't compete with the new venue at CityScape.

"Additional work, four times the money.  It's hard to compete with that," said club owner Mark Anderson.

He opened the Improv in 1988 and was going strong until some business partners decided to part ways for the allure of a developing downtown district.

"All of our comedians have stopped working here and now work at Stand Up, Live! and also get work at three other venues as part of a deal,"  Anderson said.

A lot of comic greats got a lot of laughs from that microphone, but this is not the end of comedy in Tempe.  The Improv has had a lot of great moments over the years and Mark hopes to keep the funny coming with two new projects next door, including a workshop for kids.  His toddler is one who's looking forward to the changes.

"He's a future thespian.  He's a future actor.  Very dramatic so I'm looking forward to him being able to take these classes himself."

"There's some bittersweet.  There's some sadness to closing our doors but we're opening the upbeat lounge next door that will feature alternative iTMS of comedy... sketch comedy," Anderson said.

The Tempe Improv closes June 1st.
