Remarkable Recovery for Boy with Injured Spine

Posted:

It's a Christmas miracle. A 2-year-old boy overcame incredible odds to survive and recover, after an injury that claims the lives of most of its victims.

Micah Andrews was involved in a violent car accident over the summer. His long road to recovery since then proves that Micah is something of a miracle.

Micah suffered two serious brain injuries, one of which is classified as an internal decapitation.

His skull was ripped away from his spine, causing an internal mess that kills 95 percent of those who suffer this crippling damage. Others are paralyzed.

"Something as easy as a cough or a sneeze or even moving him in bed could have made him a quadriplegic," says Dr. Nicholas Theodore from Barrow Neurological Institute.

"After the fact its way more shocking and finally did set in," says Micah's father John Andrews.

The confidence of the neurosurgeons at the Barrow Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital kept the Andrews family filled with hope that their 2-year-old would be ok.

Now Micah is making a slow but steady recovery, taking each day one step at a time. Micah is learning once again to walk and talk.

"I expect that Micah is going to do exceptionally well," says Dr. Theodore.

"Its amazing to see all the people that were sharing with us and praying for him God has turned our sorrow into joy so I'm very thankful for that," says Micah's mother Heather.

Neurosurgeons used titanium rods, wires, and even a piece of the little boy's rib cage to reattach Micah's skull to his spinal cord. Thanks to this rare procedure, Micah's going to be just fine.
