New Images Released in Sgt. Drenth Homicide Case

Posted:

There's new information surrounding the mysterious death of Phoenix Police Sgt. Sean Drenth.

Drenth was shot behind the state Capitol and his death is being investigated as a homicide, but police say they can't rule out suicide.

Police released pictures of the crime scene, along with interviews of officers who were first responders.

There are some very graphic photos - including images of Drenth's body that we can't show you. Those photos show a shotgun lying on Sgt. Drenth's chest. Both of his hands were near his side resting above his gun belt and away from the rifle and trigger.

We can show you pictures from the scene in the area where his body was found near the Capitol. You can see the evidence markers laid out and pictures of his patrol car, which was heavily dusted for fingerprints.

Along with the crime scene photos, audio and video interviews of possible witnesses were released.

One of those witnesses is George Contreras, a former Phoenix police officer who was a close friend of Drenth's. He is the subject of a recent indictment.

Investigators asked him if he knew of anyone who might want to kill Drenth or if he could have taken his own life.

"To me, the only thing that makes sense is this was a hit. It has to be a hit, I don't know what organization in Mexico or for what purpose, retaliation for some border issue... Sean didn't have any enemies I knew... I don't know why this happened, I don't know why," said Contreras.

Contreras and Drenth were both involved in an Attorney General's investigation into their off-duty work. They have ruled out Contreras as a suspect in Drenth's death.

Again, police say they have no suspects and don't know if Drenth was killed or if he took his own life.
