Nutritionist Loses Weight on 'Twinkie Diet'

Posted:

For all of the junk food junkies who don't think there is a diet out there for them, think again. Because now you can indulge your sweet tooth and lose weight while you go on the "Twinkie diet."

Mark Haub, a nutrition professor at Kansas State University, went on a diet of junk food for 10 weeks that included Twinkies. The diet, which is also being referred to as the "convenience store diet," consisted of eating powdered donuts, Twinkies, Doritos, and Oreos, as well as other junk food items.

At the end of the 10 weeks, Haub lost a total of 27 pounds and brought his body mass index (BMI) down to 24.9 from 28.8. He did it by limiting himself to 1,800 calories a day, the The Chicago Tribune reported, and he also took a multivitamin, drank a daily protein shake and ate a few vegetables.

Haub explained that the whole purpose of the diet was to prove that calorie counting, not nutrition, is the most important factor when wanting to lost weight, according to CNN.

In reference to his weight loss and cholesterol going down at the end of his experimental diet, Haub told CNN, "That's where the head scratching comes. What does that mean? Does that mean I'm healthier? Or does it mean how we define health from a biology standpoint, that we're missing something?"

Not everyone was impressed with the results. Nutrition professor at New York University, Marion Nestle, told the Chicago Tribune, "If his experiment proved anything at all, it's that calories count. If he wants to do that with junk food that's fine, but let's see how long it takes for him to gain it all back."

Haub told CNN he wishes that he had found out clearer cut results, in that he could confidently report that the diet was entirely unhealthy or completely healthy, but says he can't. He admits that it is frustrating.
