A Tucson mother and her boyfriend are in custody for allegedly abusing a 2-year-old girl.
Tucson police said Tuesday that 25-year-old Ashlee Nichole Liberty was booked into Pima County jail on suspicion of one count of child abuse. Authorities say she failed to protect her daughter.
Her 28-year-old boyfriend, Oscar Omar Aguirre, has been booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of child abuse.
Police say Aguirre isn't the girl's biological father.
Tucson police began investigating the case Saturday when the medical staff at a hospital treated the girl, who had difficulty breathing, numerous fractures and internal injuries.
According to the medical staff, the injuries were non-accidental and likely caused by blunt force trauma.
Police say the girl remained hospitalized in an intensive care unit and is expected to survive her injuries.
Another female child who is 7-years-old lived at the home with Liberty and the 2-year-old. The 7-year-old wasn't injured and has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.
