A 23-year-old assistant band instructor has been arrested, accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student.
Andrew Islas of Chandler is a part-time assistant band teacher at Tempe High School. The student was a 16-year-old female.
According to police, the sexual encounters occurred multiple times between August 2011 and November 2011. The contact took place at various locations, including Islas' Chandler home. They first met when she was just 14.
The school learned of the relationship on Tuesday and notified police. A fellow school employee reported the relationship to administrators. School officials met with parents of band students notifying them of the arrest.
Police are still trying to determine if any of the sexual contact occurred on campus.
Islas allegedly admitted to the inappropriate relationship with the victim.
Islas is facing six counts of sexual conduct with a minor. Anyone with additional information is asked to come forward.
