The school reform bill approved in the Illinois House on Thursday is being called remarkable, landmark, and historic. The vote was 112-1.
The Illinois Senate passed it earlier, so the bill is headed to Governor Quinn. The governor is expected to sign it.
The bill would make it easier to lengthen the school day and school year.
It would also change the way teachers are evaluated in hiring, firing and layoffs. Seniority would become less important. Performance and qualifications would become much more important.
The bill would also make it harder for teachers to strike; especially in Chicago, where the teachers union would need approval from three-quarters of Chicago Teacher’s Union members to vote for a walk out.
The wording on that is one reason the unions withdrew their support for the bill.
The state senator who brokered the deal, Ill. Senator Kimberly Lightfoot, spoke with FOX Chicago about if this will rescue Illinois students from a failing education system.
