Recently-elected Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said he has decided not to send his three children to the city's public schools this fall, opting instead for a prestigious private school.
Emanuel told WBBM-TV that he and his wife have decided to send their son and two daughters to the University of Chicago Lab School in Hyde Park, the same school President Barack Obama's daughters once attended.
The president of Chicago's Teachers Union has reacted with apparent sarcasm to Emanuel’s choice.
In a statement Thursday, Karen Lewis called it "wonderful" that Emanuel has the option to choose a school with small class sizes, a rich curriculum and a teacher and an assistant in every classroom.
The statement comes during a war-of-words between the union and Emanuel, who last month complained that while teachers have received two types of raises in recent years, things like a low graduation rate suggest students are getting "the shaft."
Emanuel said politics can't play into the decisions he makes for his family.
The Democrat said he realizes that sending his children to private schools while he's working to improve the Chicago Public Schools system will open him to criticism, but that's a judgment he'll have to live with.
Emanuel also said he thinks the voters who elected him will respect the decisions he makes as a father.
