Chicago Public Schools want higher standards to go with a longer school day.
Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard unveiled a new curriculum Monday with a focus on core subjects like math and reading. The program will go into effect this year at select schools.
Under the new standards, high school students will be required to take four years of math that will include algebra, trigonometry and solving real-world math problems.
In English, students will spend more time reading non-fiction and less on popular best sellers, and they will also spend more time working on vocabulary and comprehension.
Brizard unveiled his plan at the City Club.
He said the Chicago Public School system has had pockets of success, but the achievement is not system-wide.
