Houston police and FBI agents are on the hunt for 30 year old Javier Cortez for his role in the shooting death of another Texas man in April.
Investigators say Cortez and an accomplice, Florencio Leal, set out to rob 29 year old Andres Gonzalez on April 8th. Police say the pair took a significant amount of cash from the victim and then Leal shot Gonzalez twice. After he fell to the ground, police say Cortez then stood over Gonzalez and shot him nine more times. The shooting happened at the Gonzalez's apartment on Houston's southeast side.
Following the shooting, police say Leal and Cortez went to a gentlemen's club where they celebrated not only the armed robbery but the murder of the victim. Then, investigators say both men stried to rob a house in Pasadena, Texas. While Cortez escaped, police say Leal was shot in the arm during that robbery. Based on his injury, investigators were able to track down Leal and arrest him.
Agents believe Cortez fled to Mexico but is now living in Chicago. They received several tips indicating Cortez has friends and relatives here and he may be working as a carpenter or cabinet maker. Investigators also say both Leal and Cortez are members of the Houstone Tango Blast street gang.
Here is a detailed description of what agents say Cortez looks like. He is described as a Hispanic male, about 5'' 5", weighing around 142 pounds, black hair, brown eyes, and has tattoos on both of his upper arms .
Cortez is considered armed and dangerous. If you see him, call police.
A ten-thousand dollar reward is being offered for any tips leading to Cortez's arrest. If you have any information about this case, call the Chicago FBI Bureau at (312) 421-6700.
