Investigative reporter

Doug Smith

Doug Smith is the investigative reporter at WTVT-TV in Tampa. Together with investigative producer Lisa Blegen and photojournalist Craig Davisson, he has won numerous awards, including an Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Silver Baton. Their series, Small Town Justice, uncovered new evidence that helped free a truck driver sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Smith and his team also won four consecutive regional Emmy awards for investigative reporting in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, and a regional Edward R. Murrow award.

Doug came to WTVT-TV in Tampa in 2003 from WFTV-TV Orlando, where he served as the managing editor. His responsibilities there included supervising the investigative unit, which won a regional Edward R. Murrow award in 2003.

He's no stranger to the Tampa Bay area, having spent almost eight years as the weekend anchor/reporter at WFTS-TV, where he was honored by MADD for coverage of drunk driving issues.

Doug graduated with honors from the University of California at Berkeley. His broadcasting career began at KCRA-TV in Sacramento, California. In the early 90's, he took his first reporting job in Salinas, California, then moved to Las Vegas where he was the morning anchor at KTNV-TV, until 1994 when he came to Tampa.
