(NewsCore) - A small asteroid was set to make a close pass of the Earth on Friday, passing within 36,750 miles (59,100 kilometers) of the planet.
The newfound asteroid -- named 2012 BX34 -- measures about 37 feet (11 meters) wide, meaning it is much too small to pose a threat to Earth.
NASA's Asteroid Watch program, based in Pasadena, Calif., announced the discovery on its Twitter feed. The space rock will pass our planet about 10:30am EST.
"It [the asteroid] wouldn't get through our atmosphere intact even if it dared to try," NASA said.
The asteroid will pass Earth at a distance much closer than the moon, which orbits Earth at about 240,000 miles (386,000 kilometers).
