(NewsCore) - Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus on Sunday compared President Barack Obama to Francesco Schettino, the captain of the shipwrecked Costa Concordia.
During an interview on CBS' "Face the Nation," Priebus said Obama is "abandoning the ship here in the United States and is more interested in campaigning than doing his job as president."
When asked to elaborate, Priebus expanded on his comment.
"I called him Captain Schettino, you know, the captain that fled the ship in Italy," Priebus said. "That's our own president, who is fleeing the American people and not doing his job and running around the country and campaigning."
The cruise ship ran aground off the island of Giglio on Italy's Tuscan coast on Jan. 13 with roughly 4,200 people aboard. Seventeen bodies have been recovered, and 16 people remain missing.
Schettino is under house arrest facing charges of manslaughter and abandoning ship.
