PHOENIX - The driver of an SUV was trapped Thursday afternoon when he lost control of his vehicle and it rolled over and struck a utility pole.
On Thursday afternoon, Phoenix Firefighters responded to the area of 19th Ave and Northern and observed live power lines had fallen on top of the SUV, trapping the person inside.
George Lindell was rear-ended by the victim. "Well I was driving down Northern Ave, getting ready to run into Albertson's, and all of a sudden I was just minding my own business - BAM! Hit me hard right from the back!..." [Press play for more]
The area was secured and crews contacted SRP to cut off electricity to the area. It was hours before power was restored to the neighborhood.
Northern Ave between 7th Ave and 19th Ave was also closed temporarily for assessment and cleanup.
Phoenix Police Sgt. Steve Martos said the driver had a medical condition which caused him to swerve and take out the power pole. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital.
The victim gave bystanders a thumbs-up while he was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher. His injuries were not life-threatening.
