PHOENIX - A three-vehicle collision involving a gas tanker on Interstate 10 in west Phoenix killed two infants and seriously injured their mother and another woman on Saturday afternoon. I-10 eastbound was shut down at 51st Avenue to 43rd Avenue, and it did not reopen until 12:42 a.m. on Sunday.
The Arizona Department of Public Safety said at about 2:45 p.m., a car slowed on I-10 to look at a minor collision, forcing a minivan to stop to avoid a crash. A blue sedan then hit the minivan, and a gas tanker rearended both vehicles before overturning on its side, DPS said.
A 13-month-old girl, a 3-week-old boy, and a woman believed to be their mother were critically injured in the sedan and taken to local hospitals. The babies died at about 3:45 p.m. The 35-year-old woman in the minivan suffered nonfatal injuries, and the tanker driver was not hurt.
Both the mother and the woman in the minivan were in serious condition Saturday night.
DPS is looking for a man driving a white or gray Dodge Magnum for questioning.
The tanker was transporting at least 8,000 gallons of diesel fuel, but the area did not have to be contained by hazardous materials units.
I-10 was crowded with drivers going to Arizona State University's first game of the season and those traveling for Labor Day.
