Safety of Cancun Travel in Question after Bombing

PHOENIX - The Mexican resort city of Cancun is known for its white sandy beaches and great weather -- but after armed attackers threw Molotov cocktails into a bar, killing eight Mexican nationals, some travelers have raised safety concerns.

The bombing happened 3 miles from where Americans and other tourists spend their vacations. So should visitors stay away from Cancun?

Audrey Petersen just returned from Cancun and says she never felt unsafe. She did her research and didn't see any travel warnings about Cancun -- this attack is the first of its kind in Cancun.

The attack happened in an older part of Cancun, mostly populated by locals, where tourists rarely visit. However, Petersen went looking for an authentic taco shop nearby and says she didn't feel unsafe.

"This is an area you wouldn't normally go to anyway," says Paul Sieferth from Terra Travel. "Cancun has been around for years. This is where the locals go, not where tourists go. Tourists would be on the beach where the fun and action is, and the hotels."

Sieferth says reports of Mexico violence are giving resort towns a bad name. An official travel warning has not been issued.

The establishment that was bombed reportedly had some connection to the Zetas drug cartel.
