Only On Fox:

-Toxic Airlines -

Statement from the FAA:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is committed to protecting the safety and health of passengers and cabin crews on our nation’s airlines. Studies have indicated that cabin air is as good as or better than the air found in offices and homes. FAA regulations require that airplanes be designed to provide the equivalent of at least 0.55 pound of fresh air per minute per occupant, a ventilation rate that is consistent with other public environments. Airlines have the added benefit of flying at altitudes above the air pollution that is circulated into the spaces on the ground that we occupy on a daily basis. For those aircraft that ecirculate some part of the cabin air, that air is typically passed through high quality filters and most airplanes use High Efficiency Particulate (HEPA) filters.

In response to a National Research Council (NRC) report and Congressional concerns, the FAA created a Center of Excellence to investigate the cabin environment , you may see it referred toas both ACER and RITE. The web address is . Our research program investigates the following subjects:

-Ozone in the passenger cabin

-Exposure and risks of pesticides on aircraft

-Cabin pressure effects on health and safety

-Aircraft incident monitoring and reporting

-In-flight measurement of cabin contaminants

-Contaminant transport inside airliner cabins

-Sensors to detect chemical and biological contaminants

-Decontamination and disinfection technologies

-Advanced weather modeling to predict atmospheric ozone

The FAA believes that the cabin environment in the vast majority of commercial flights is safe. However, we are concerned that if certain mechanical failures occur, the cabin environment may contain contaminants. There were 900 report of these "fume events" over 10 years from 1999-2008. There are approx. 2 million flights per year in the United States. We are conducting the previously identified research to address reasonable concerns expressed by Congress, the traveling public, and cabin crews.

The FAA established the Airliner Cabin Environment Research (ACER) is comprised of seven universities and is now known as the Center of Excellence for Research in the Intermodal Transport Environment (RITE) to conduct research to address the previously identified studies.Under normal conditions, products of engine combustion are kept separate from the air that goes into a cabin, so these potentially harmful products only enter the cabin when a significant malfunction occurs such as an engine surge (i.e., a reversal of the normal flow within the engine). It may make sense that sensors should be developed to detect either the physical presence of oil/hydraulic droplets or vapor or other harmful products. In developing new standards, we first must consider the safety benefit and then also the associated costs and the probability of encountering the events. We believe that these malfunctions are rare, and the sensors could be very complex and expensive (e.g., if the sensor must detect some organic compound). An apparatus known as sensor backbone has been developed by our Center of Excellence and it has been accepted for installation on aircraft. The idea is to attach sensors to the backbone in order to collect, store, and transmit research data. The next step is to develop the sensors to be attached to the backbone. Cost effective and reliable sensors capable of collecting cabin contamination data are yet to be developed and are the subject of ongoing research. Please note that another study is beign done by the American Society of Heating, Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Engineers (ASHRAE) - Battelle Phase 2 air quality survey which is expected to be completed late 2009 or early 2010.
