Parents, child-care givers and teachers rallied at the State Capitol Tuesday to protest steep hikes in daycare license fees.
The Department of Health Services announced this month that because of budget cuts, it would shift the full cost of regulating child-care to the industry itself.
Starting Jan. 1, the state's largest child-care centers would see a three-year license rise from a $150 flat fee to $13,442.
About 300 people who protested on the Capitol lawn appealed to Gov. Jan Brewer to spend stimulus dollars delay the fee increases.
Brewer spokesman Paul Senseman said using stimulus funding was "certainly worth considering," as was using money from the voter-created First Things First program which supports education and health programs for children.
