In front of an audience of camera crews and students, Gov. Jan Brewer flipped the switch at the Capitol Monday morning, lighting the Capitol Christmas tree.
She was joined by students from Beaver Creek School, while a representative from the Salt River Indian Community gave a blessing.
In her speech, Brewer referred to the holiday as "Christmas," which may surprise some, and she mentions it many times.
Back in 2001, when Janet Napolitano was running for Arizona Governor, her office sent out a memo telling state offices not to mention Christmas.
Everything was referred to under the generic term "holidays." A Christmas tree became a holiday tree, and a menorah became a candle-holder.
Call it political correctness, sensitivity to other religions, or call it ridiculous -- which is what Jan Brewer called it before she became governor. When Brewer was Secretary of State, she vowed to bring Christmas back.
The Gov.'s office is not commenting on Brewer's usage of "Christmas" at the tree-lighting ceremony.
The decorated tree will be on display at the Capitol throughout the holiday season.
