PAUL DAVENPORT, Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has picked dates in April and June for the special elections which will choose a replacement for Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

Brewer on Friday set the primary election for Tuesday, April 17. The general election will be held on Tuesday, June 12.

Several Democrats are considering running for the seat representing District 8, which includes parts of Tucson and Santa Cruz County and all of Cochise County.

One Republican is formally in the race and two others have exploratory committees.

Giffords resigned on Wednesday, a little over a year after she was severely wounded while meeting with constituents at a Tucson supermarket. Six people were killed and 12 others wounded.

She said she needed more time to recover from the traumatic brain injury she suffered.
