PHOENIX - A litter of newborn puppies was snatched from a field before they could be rescued and now there's a reward being offered for their safe return to their mother.
Lola is a beautiful girl. This former street dog has a home at the Animals Benefit Club shelter in Phoenix, but her five 3-day old puppies are missing.
"It's a very unusual situation..we can't figure out why..." said ABC's Andrea Jeffress.
The person who discovered the puppies in a field near 43rd Avenue and Glendale took a picture of them, called for help and left the scene.
Jeffress has rescued animals for years, but this rescue surprised her.
"By the time we could respond, the puppies had been removed by two young girls. That's all we know..and the mom was left behind," she said.
Jeffress looked all over the field and took the wailing mother back to the shelter. She can't imagine why anyone would take newborn puppies.
"Unless somebody has been bottle feeding them and know what to do..they're probably not alive, but if someone knows and they're still alive, we want them back with their mother," said Jeffress.
Everywhere you look in this neighborhood, you'll see signs offering a $250 reward for the safe return of the puppies and they're running out of time.
While Lola waits for the return of her pups, Andrea hopes this sweet dog finds a permanent home.
Jeffress says no shelter takes in newborn puppies and leaves the mother behind. It's important for the survival of the puppies to be with their mother for at least six weeks.
