We all know the importance of vitamins, but what about Vitamin D? Some believe that a dose of D can help when it comes to battling a life-threatening disease like cancer.

New research shows that imbalances in key vitamins could impact your cancer risk and chances for survival.

Oncologist Glenn Tisman says that while foods that contain synthetic victiams cut the number of birth defects in half, there may be unintended consequences.

Cancer researchers have noticed thousands more cases of three common cancers: colorectal cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Dr. Tisman has been researching the link between vitamins and cancer for more than 30 years. Dr. Tisman says that too much folic acid, aka folate, can interfere with the body's ability to utilize Vitamin B-12.

Six years ago, Charity Holmes was diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. Tests found she was low in Vitamin D and B-12 -- Dr. Tisman wasn't surprised.

Doctors recommend a small amount of sun every day in order to get a dose of Vitamin D.

FOX 10's Andrea Robinson has more.
