NORENE, Tenn. - A 3-year-old Tennessee girl is dead after accidentally shooting herself with her stepfather’s handgun. She apparently thought it was a Wii video game controller.
According to WTVF in Nashville, investigators said Doug Cronberger took his gun out to check on a possible prowler outside their home. He set it down in the living room when he came back in.
Tina Cronberger told police her daughter Cheyenne had recently played a video game with a gun controller. She believes the girl thought the real gun was her fake one.
She shot herself in the abdomen while her mother was sitting at a computer just a few feet away.
“It looks so real. I mean, when you take that and you can look at my glock, there are real similarities,” said Wilson County Det. Jeff Johnson. “These toys are so realistic looking this 3-year-old didn’t know the difference.”
Johnson called the case a terrible tragedy.
“You just don’t leave a handgun laying around – or any other kind of gun for that matter – where a small child can accidently kill themselves,” he said.
The family is cooperating with investigators. The district attorney will likely take the case to a grand jury to determine if any charges will be filed.
