PHOENIX - A storage warehouse in Phoenix went up in flames and smoke could be seen for miles Thursday night. On Friday, many people who stored their belongings there found out they had lost everything.
Fire decimated the storage units at Ultimate Movers LLC, near 29th Avenue and Clarendon, and losses are being estimated at $5 to $10 million. Cars, pianos, furniture and even a motorcycle worth $100,000 was stored at the facility, police said.
The losses were also felt by some businesses and at least one church that stored materials and equipment at the site.
It took firefighters 5.5 hours using 10,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. All of the stored items made it particularly difficult for firefighters to fight the flames.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, but several witnesses claimed to have seen someone throwing something that looked like a cigarette onto a stack of taped pallets. The blaze is under investigation.
