PHOENIX - Foursquare is the latest and greatest app for your smartphone. You use it to check in at places you go each day.
Alex Munoz has used the service for almost a year now and says "It's just a fun game you can play with your friends knowing where everyone is so they know where you are."
Digital Marketing Strategist Michael Barber says "When you check in, it will bring up a list of locations you're around..you select the business you want to check into and check in."
Businesses are catching on, rewarding you for coming in - checking in on Foursquare and letting others know where you are.
At Honeymoon Sweets Bakery in Tempe, on your first check in, you'll get a free piece of candy.
Stingray Sushi will give you a free sushi roll or sake bomber on your fifth check in. "It's definitely something new and we're excited to try it out and see what kind of response we do get from it," said Andrew Nam.
Besides the free garb, you can earn badges, even titles - if you visit a place the most often, you become "mayor" there - and being mayor pays off.
At the Vig in Phoenix, you can get a free drink!
It sounds fun, right? But letting everyone know where you are and when you're there can be dangerous.
That's where privacy settings come into play. You can control exactly who sees what you're doing.
"The application has built-in security feature so you can share where you're at with your friends. You can share with anyone on Foursquare and you can also lock down your profile so not even the business sees when you're here or your friends or anyone or Foursquare," said Alex Tighe, who uses the service.
The trend is catching on as Foursquare has a million users nationwide.
