PEORIA, Ariz. - A 20-year-old woman who was allegedly run down by her strict Iraqi father for becoming "too Westernized" has died of her injuries.
According to Peoria Police, Noor Faleh Almaleki, 20, died Monday -- almost two weeks after her 48-year-old father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, ran her over in the parking lot of a Peoria business.
Noor Almaleki was walking with her boyfriend's mother, 43-year-old Amal Edan Khalaf, on the afternoon of October 20 when they were struck by the Jeep, who police say was driven by Faleh Almaleki.
"By his own admission, this was an intentional act and the reason was because his daughter had brought shame upon him and his family," said prosecutor Stephanie Low.
Faleh Almaleki spent a week on the run until he was apprehended in Atlanta, Georgia over the weekend. Police say Almaleki drove his vehicle to Mexico and abandoned it, before getting on a plane to London. He was refused entrance into London and U.K. authorities put him on a plane to Atlanta. He was extradited to Arizona and booked into the 4th Ave Jail on Saturday.
"This defendant hopped two countries in an attempt to escape and we believe that his family has given him assistance in his escape," said Low.
Family and friends told Peoria investigators that Almaleki was mad and threatened his daughter for adopting Western ways. He apparently became enraged when he learned that Noor had moved in with her boyfriend and her boyfriend's mother, Amal Eden Khalaf. Khalaf remains in serious but stable condition, and doctors say she should survive.
Almaleki and his family had moved to Glendale from Iraq.
Almaleki was initially facing two counts of aggravated assault -- but those charges will now be upgraded. Almaleki is being held on $5 million bail as he is considered a flight risk.
