2-Year-Old Boy Recovers from Drowning Scare

August is drowning prevention month

MESA - A Mesa family is advocating drowning prevention awareness, after their 2-year-old son nearly drowns in their backyard pool.

The Shores family never thought something like this would happen to them, but they came very close to losing their son last month. They want to remind people how quickly a life can change forever.

Stryker Shores made a full recovery, after spending about 2 minutes underwater when he fell into the swimming pool on July 19.

Scott Shores, Stryker's father, says the family was inside the house and didn't realize Stryker went outside. The pool area was being renovated, so the fence was down. His mom found him a few minutes later.

"And he was lifeless -- and she started screaming for me -- and I went running out and just instantly knew. I started CPR and resuscitated him," says Shores.

Shores knows the importance of learning CPR. "You never know if you're going to save a family member or a neighbor or just some stranger in a store or in a parking lot."

After what happened to their son, the Shores have become advocates for drowning prevention, spreading the word that you can never be too careful when it comes to kids and water.

The family wants to thank the firefighters who responded to Stryker's near drowning, and also the doctors and nurses at the Cardon Children's Medical Center where he was treated.
