GLENDALE, Ariz. - It appears the fire started in a backyard shed, then spread to the home's attic.
Three out of the seven people living here were home.
"First I smelled smoke. I couldn't tell where it was coming from, but eventually, I went outside. There were ashes everywhere. Then I saw the shed and it was engulfed in flames, just completely incinerated," said Jacob Heidmann.
He and his sister grabbed their grandmother and got out.
"I saw a lot of ash on the trampoline and then I guess it all started getting really hectic."
Once they got to the home near 67th Avenue and Camelback, Glendale firefighters were able to put the fire out fairly quickly, preventing it from destroying the entire home.
The family showed us the damage inside. The attic is charred, but as bad as that looks, many of the items are still salvageable.
"I am very thankful that my family is fine. All of this other stuff can be replaced..we are going to be fine," said Paul Heidmann.
Because the fire stayed mostly in the attic, fire crews had to tear out part of the ceiling to put it out. They had just enough time to cover items with tarps so they wouldn't be damaged.
How the fire started is unknown.
"I don't know what was the source of the fire and the fire inspectors couldn't figure that out either, so a bit of a mystery there," said Paul Heidmann.
The Red Cross was on the scene Wednesday afternoon helping this family find a new place to stay.
