PHOENIX - A west Phoenix family wakes up in the middle of the night to find their home on fire, but it wasn't the smoke alarm that saved their lives.
It was the alarm on a truck that started going off - the sound of the horn honking woke up the family of three, saving their lives.
They were too upset to talk to FOX 10, but their close friend had this to say: "It's really good..saved their lives and what else could you want..this is all material stuff..it can be replaced, a life can't," said Jeremiah Lua.
The fire began around 3:00 a.m. near 83rd Avenue and Indian School, destroying the home's carport along with two vehicles, then spread to the attic. Most of the home has smoke damage.
The family spent the day salvaging what they could.
"One day to another you know, last night it was perfect and then boom, it's really devastating," said Lua.
Ironically, fire investigators told the family that the alarm on the truck saved their lives, but that same truck is also what caused the fire.
The family was renting the home and they're taking their remaining belongings to find a new place to live.
