PHOENIX - Activist groups gathered outside of the Phoenix City Hall on Tuesday, asking the police department to basically ignore Arizona's new immigration law if it takes effect on Thursday.
Leaders of the Puente Movement say they are worried the law will hurt families in Arizona. They sent a letter to Police Chief Jack Harris, asking how Phoenix officers will implement the law, especially in schools and when illegal immigrants are victims of crimes.
"If our community is victims of crimes, are they going to be able to call police without the danger of being deported, without the danger of being separated from their families?" said Carlos Garcia.
SB 1070 forces officers to ask for proof of immigration status if they have reasonable suspicion someone is in the country illegally.
Chief Jack Harris has previously voiced his opposition to the law.
It goes into effect Thursday at 12 a.m., unless a judge orders an injunction. The ruling could come down at any time.
