PEORIA, Ariz. - As part of their weekend crime sweep, Sheriff's deputies served a search warrant Saturday at On Your Way Carwash and Quick Lube in Peoria, detaining nine people.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio was stripped of some of his power earlier this month, but that hasn't stopped him from conducting a crime sweep this weekend . According to the rule, his deputies can't arrest immigration violators who haven't been arrested for another crime.
MCSO says the business was searched because the employees were suspected of engaging in identity theft and that the employers knowingly hired undocumented workers.
Two people have been arrested and seven people were detained. Two were accused of using a fake ID, and the other seven were turned over to ICE because they couldn't prove their citizenship.
"I think it's bullcrap. Let them work. The Sheriff's department should take care of real criminals, not people who are working," says employee Josh Hernandez.
Deputies also arrested a manager for driving on a suspended license.
The Sheriff's new tool, video cameras , were missing at the car wash. Arpaio says the cameras will only be used during traffic stops, not during searches.
