PHOENIX (AP) — Arizona regulators have approved rules to require electricity utilities to use programs to promote energy efficiency and reduce demand during peak periods.

The Corporation Commission says the rules approved Tuesday require utilities to use incentives and other tools to reduce use during peak periods, thereby reducing the need for new generation and transmission facilities. Home energy audits, weatherization are among steps that can be used.

The rules require state-regulated utilities to submit annual implementation plans and mandates specified energy savings.
