PHOENIX - A gay rights protest was held in front of a valley Catholic church Saturday, but it was held by other churches.
The demonstration was held outside St. Mary's Basilica near 3rd Street and Monroe in downtown Phoenix by No Longer Silent - Clergy for Justice, and others who support gay rights.
They're against the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix adopting the Manhattan declaration, as they group says the document discriminates.
"Young people who have felt rejected by their family, their churches, their community for being gay and lesbian if the church is encouraging that kind of discrimination, then that's something we need to stand up and say it's wrong," said David Felton of No Longer Silent.
Supporters say the Manhattan declaration unites a variety of Christian traditions.
The Diocese maintains that the document upholds Catholic teachings that the church can not compromise.
